Substitute Teacher Requirements

In order to substitute teach in the Bernards Township School District, candidates MUST hold either a Substitute Certificate OR a NJ Teaching Certificate. You need only apply for a Substitute Certificate if you do not have a NJ Teaching Certificate. In order to apply for a Substitute Certificate, candidates will need:

- 30+ College Credits.

- Completed Substitute Application Packet, Completion of Criminal History background check, Completion of Substitute Application through NJEdCert.

All candidates applying to become a substitute teacher must have the following documentation complete and on file prior to assignment.

*All candidates must also attend a Substitute Orientation Meeting and complete NJ State Required Training. Orientation meetings are held quarterly, typically in January, April, July, and September.

STEPS

1. Candidates must request a packet from the Board Office. The packet will be EMAILED. Packets can be requested from Ashley Dunker ([email protected]).

2. Packets should be completed and returned electronically. If applying for a Substitute Certificate, a completed NJEdCert profile must be created, and proof of your application/finalized certificate submitted to the Board of Education Office.

3. Candidates will be invited via email to attend a substitute orientation meeting upon return of this packet. Orientation meeting times and frequency are TBD based on the number of applicants and completed documentation.

4. If you are missing documentation after the meeting, you will NOT be advised. It is your responsibility to ensure all paperwork is complete at this time.

5. If applying for a Substitute Certificate, the following must be sent directly to the board office for processing:

- Applicant NJEdCert tracking information/finalized certificate.

- Fingerprint Clearance Applicant Approval Employment History Form (this takes about 2 weeks to receive once you are fingerprinted. You may provide copies of receipts in the interim until your clearance is issued).

6. The process of completing the above steps and the state issuing your substitute certificate typically takes 2-4 weeks once all paperwork is complete.

7. All candidates must be BOARD APPROVED. Substitutes will not be permitted to work until Board approval occurs. You will receive your Board approval date during the orientation. Candidates that do not attend the orientation will not be Board approved.

8. After Board approval occurs, you will be entered into Absence Management within one week. Log-in credentials will be sent via personal email addresses provided in the orientation meeting. Once you have credentials, you can begin actively accepting assignments. NO CREDENTIALS WILL BE GIVEN UNLESS ALL PAPERWORK IS COMPLETE AND ON FILE.
