Following our middle school philosophy, counseling services are both developmental and proactive by design.  We encourage all students and parents to utilize our services whenever the need arises.

      CONFERENCES

School Counselors encourage an open-door policy.  Students may stop by the counseling office at any time to sign up for a conference.  Prioritizing student needs is always a factor in scheduling student/counselor sessions.

Students, parents, teachers, or counselors may initiate conferences at any time during the year. Conferences may be initiated to discuss such items as scheduling, high school course options, standardized testing, academic or personal problems, and community resources. Parents may call the Counseling Office, 204-2610 ext. 114, whenever they wish a conference.

      REPORTING PROCEDURES

Report cards and progress reports are available for parents to view online. Grades may be viewed at any time.

Unsatisfactory work notices will be sent to parents of students whose work suggests the need for additional effort. Parents are requested to sign the notice and return it to school. The notice may also serve as communication to initiate a parent teacher conference.

Parent teacher conferences are held at the team meetings or on an individual basis. All parents/guardians are urged to talk to individual teachers before bringing classroom concerns to the counseling department.  Parents are invited to initiate a conference at any time they feel it advisable by phoning the Counseling Office at 204 2610 ext. 114 and speaking with their child's counselor.

      CLASSROOM MODULES

Counselors reach out to all students by teaching  lessons, or modules, in classrooms throughout the year.  Topics, such as study skills, social skills, organization, and time management are discussed at all grade levels.

HONORS ENTRANCE CRITERIA FOR STUDENT ENTERING GRADE 9

Students may enroll in an honors course if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • A third marking period average grade of “A-” or better in the currently enrolled course.
(A third marking period average grade of B or better for students currently enrolled in geometry)

  • A third marking period average grade average of “B+” in the currently enrolled course and a teacher recommendation.

      Recommendation Procedures:

Teachers at William Annin Middle School will make recommendations for course placement after mid-year.  At the end of the third marking period, grades will determine level placement options and final teacher recommendations will be elicited. A student who does not meet the honors criteria at the end of the third marking period will be scheduled for the College Prep level of the course. Students who do not meet the honors criteria, but who believe that they have extenuating circumstances that should be considered in the scheduling decision, may submit an appeal to their school counselors at William Annin by June 15th.  Honors Appeal forms are available in the William Annin Counseling office beginning on June 1st. The curriculum supervisors and/or High School Principal will make decisions regarding appeals by July 15th.  Students will be notified in writing of the appeal decision by July 31, and will receive an updated schedule by August 15th.

      CRITERIA FOR APPEAL

The decision to grant the appeal will be based on the following criteria:

                  Standardized Test Scores

                  Overall academic performance

Performance demonstrated by mid-term and final exams

Teacher’s recommendation for course being appealed
